Big Idea: Geography: Understanding the locations of nations from around the world.
Essential Question: How does geography impact the people living in various countries around the world?
Objective: Students will identify the locations of the major countries of the world.
Summative Assessment: Students will complete a video that explains the facts about one randomly selected country. The video will include an image of the country's flag, the name of the nation's capital city, an image of the country's location on the globe (Whirly Globe App), the geographic coordinates, languages spoken, type of government, and population.

Lesson Opening
ilearn Continents and Oceans: Students will play the game until they can identify the continents and oceans.
Once they are successful, they will open the iSpin Selector app and select 25 possible outcomes on the spinner. They will spin the wheel to determine which country they will research. There are 25 countries. The number the spinner lands on will reflect the country they are to research. A sample document is attached here. This can also be done with qr codes. Each QR code could have a number on it. Students would scan the QR code to reveal their country.
Lesson Body
Whirly Globe - Students will locate their country in the app and they will snap a screen shot of their country's location on the globe.
Students will use one or both apps below to research their assigned country.
National Geographic World Atlas: This is an atlas app with information on the countries of the world.
Atlas for iPad: This is another atlas option for students.

Stack the Countries: A game that challenges students to recognize the shape, flags and capitals from different countries from around the world.
Closing
Students will complete a video that explains the facts about one randomly selected country. The video will include an image of the country's flag, the name of the nation's capital city, an image of the country's location on the globe (Whirly Globe App), the geographic coordinates, languages spoken, type of government, and population.
Explain Everything Students will use the app to make their video. They will narrate the video with their own voice. Students will work independently.
