Civil Rights Heroes
The following lesson is a short project on Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. Students will create an artifact that describes their chosen hero and the impact that they had on society. Students will use three different social media platforms throughout this project. Each platform and the products and performances will be described below.
Objective:
The objective of this lesson is to help students understand the lasting impact of the civil rights movement and to learn more about the people who played a part in changing America.
Standards to be Addressed:
§113.19. Social Studies, Grade 7, Beginning with School Year 2011-2012.
(b) Knowledge and skills.
(F) analyze the political, economic, and social impact of major events in the latter half of the 20th and early 21st centuries such as major conflicts, the emergence of a two-party system, political and economic controversies, immigration, and migration.

A Heroes Tale: Students will create a Voicethread about a civil rights hero.
Student Description (located in Edmodo):
You will create a Voicethread on a Civil Rights Hero. You can choose to do a voicethread on any hero of the Civil Rights Movement. Your Voicethread should include your hero's name, what they were fighting for, events they participated in, and most importantly the impact that their efforts have on our society today. Voicethreads can be audio, video, or text. If you use images for your Voicethread please include a references page and be sure that you are following the terms of the image license. You should also also explain why you think this hero's contribution is significant today. A question you might ask to help you answer that is - How would life be different today for some people if this hero did not take action? Your voicethread should be about 3 minutes long.

If a Hero Tweets does it get a RT? Students will tweet as their chosen hero.

You will be assigned a twitter handle. Customize your account to a Civil Rights Hero and and make a series of at 10 tweets about what your hero is fighting for. You should also re-tweet and favorite at least 5 other tweets from your classmates. Make your tweets in the first person. Mention @civilrightshero in your tweet and include the #civhero hashtag and the class # so for 1st period it would be #nim1, second period #nim2 etc. The use of other # is optional but encouraged. Put yourself in the shoes of your hero. If they were tweeting about social injustice and inequality, what would they say? You can use speeches or quotes as inspiration for your tweets. Performances:
Social Media Peer Review Activity: Students will post their Voicethread in Edmodo for other students to view and leave comments or suggestions for enhancement.
Student Description: Post your completed Voicethread in Edmodo and review two other student's Voicethreads. When you leave a comment remember to be respectful. In your comments please provide positive comments if appropriate but also leave suggestions for improvement. Perhaps their is something that can be done to make it look or sound better? Don't be afraid to leave your input, just do it in a constructive way. Be sure you comment to people in a nice and friendly manner. You should ask students a question about their hero and you should also be answering questions that people ask you about your hero.
Social Media Fair Exhibit: Students will be present for an online event organized through Twitter
Student Description: We will have a Hall of Heroes event that is organized through Twitter. We will notify parents and teachers about our event. You will tweet out your voicethread with the #hallofheroes tag. Parents, teachers, and the community will be notified via twitter, the school website, the marquis , and via email. You will interact with others as they respond to your voicethread and tweets.
